This class is facilitated by students in WKU’s Communication Disorders Clinic. The WKU Communications Dept. has done an amazing job integrating this with virtual options for those who are still wanting to be at home.
This partnership with the WKU student nurses and the Buddy House Adult Skills Class has given us the opportunity to meet with approximately 80 future nurses a semester and provide the information and insight into individuals with Down syndrome and the experiences families have raising them from a prenatal diagnosis through the aging process. In return, the student nurses work with our teens and adults on a variety of presentations including, nutrition, hygiene, fitness, and safety!
One WKU student nurse’s reflection, “Today I learned that there is a lot of love in the world and most of it is concentrated at the Buddy House. The clients were so excited and happy for us to be there. It was truly an exhilarating experience.”
Mondays & Wednesdays beginning at 9:00 AM. This class focuses on a variety of social, academic, & functional skills to help individuals with Down syndrome become more independent while keeping their mind and body active. Each month we choose a meal, go shop for groceries, and cook a delicious & healthy meal! We also have many community partners come in and talk to our class.
Thursdays from 10:00 - 12:00 PM. This club will focus on community service projects to enhance, highlight, and advocate within the local communities we serve.
We do fitness every Monday and Wednesday morning from 9:00 - 10:00 AM.
Every third Friday of the month from 6:00 – 8:00 PMThis is a social activity where each month is a different form of entertainment or theme. Volunteers help with socializing, leading activities, serving in the kitchen, set up, and clean up.
Ambassadors of Good Will & Hugs! Rockerz practice is every Monday at 4:30 PM at Hillvue Heights.
In 2015, The Bowling Green Hot Rods organization approached Down Syndrome of Southern KY about a volunteer program with Buddy House participants and the BG Hot Rods minor league ball team. This was a wonderful experience for our volunteers, the Hot Rods, and the fans who come to the ballpark!
